Tomas Bata University in Zlín

Department of Theoretical Studies

About Us

The less experimental work done by people engaged in the actual practice of a profession and intent on extracting from it as much material gain as they can, the more energy and careful thought must the schools devote to experiment and research.“ (Armin Hofmann: Graphic design manual, 1965, s. 11)

The department brings together academic staff who deal with the history of art, film, architecture, design, photography, and general aesthetics, cultural management, the reflection of society from the perspective of visual culture as well as in other contexts. Responsible for teaching the theoretical base, it is involved in publishing and other creative activities and initiates and implements Faculty projects both in the domestic and international context. Individual workers ensure that the Faculty has access to current information sources, is involved in project activity, and they help fulfil the so-called third role of the university. Actively participating in international conferences, they present the achievements of the FMC and, at the same time, bring new impetus for the development of teaching and artistic research.
