State Doctoral Exam and Defense

State Doctoral Exam

A PhD student may apply for the state doctoral examination after successfully passing all subjects prescribed by his or her individual study plan. It is vital that all necessary documents listed Article 44 of the Study and Examination Regulations of Tomas Bata University in Zlín are delivered to the Creative Activities Department at least 4 weeks before the scheduled date of the examination. These include:

  1. application for the state doctoral examination, including a proposed list of members of the examination board under Article 45 of the Study and Examination Regulations of TBU in Zlín. The supervisor must discuss the planned date of the examination in advance with all members of the board.
  2. a list of activities carried out during the doctoral study, published works or manuscripts of works to be accepted for publication, together with their list (OBD) and documents proving their acceptance for publication, or a list of works of art and reactions to them (RUV), including photo documentation on CD,
  3. a paper on dissertation work in five copies and in an electronic version on CD/DVD,
  4. structured resume,
  5. a written position of the supervisor on the course of the doctoral study,
  6. a written position of the director of the institute / head of the studio under which the doctoral candidate was assigned to perform pedagogical activities and other activities related to research, development and creative activities within the framework of doctoral studies,
  7. a written position of the vice-dean for creative activities confirming the fulfillment of requirements on the candidate’s scientific and creative activities,
  8. proof of the passing of all required previous examinations.

The members of the State Doctoral Examination Board are informed of the proceedings 14 days in advance.

Dissertation Defense

After passing the state doctoral exam, the doctoral student enrolls for the defense of the dissertation. It is necessary that all the documents provided for in Article 48 of the TBU Study and Examination Rules in Zlín are delivered to the R&D department at least 8 weeks before the planned date of the defense. These include:

  1. application for defense of the dissertation, including the list of the members of the board set up under Articles 50 and 51 of the Study and Examination Regulations of TBU in Zlín. The supervisor must discuss the planned date of the defense in advance with all members of the board.
  2. dissertation paper in five copies and in an electronic version on CD/DVD,
  3. theses of the dissertation paper in five copies and in an electronic version on CD/DVD,
  4. a creative act, provided the main result of the dissertation was the creation of one,
  5. an overview of the activities carried out during the study in the doctoral study program, published works or manuscripts of works that have been accepted for publication, together with a list of them and documents proving their acceptance for publication, or a list of works of art and reactions to them, including photographic documentation on CD/DVD,
  6. a statement of co-authors on the contribution of the author to individual works in the case of a thematically structured set of published works with an accompanying text under Article 47 of the Study and Examination Regulations of TBU in Zlín,
  7. a written position of the candidate’s supervisor on the dissertation paper,
  8.  a written position of the vice-dean for creative activities on the fulfillment of the requirements on publishing and creative activities by the doctoral student,
  9. an internal defense report signed by the head of the department/studio.

Within one month of receipt of the dissertation paper, opponents specified in the application for the defense of the dissertation paper shall prepare an opinion pursuant to Article 51 of the Study and Examination Regulations of TBU in Zlín.

Opponent opinions on dissertation work must be delivered to all members of the Dissertation Defense Board at least 15 days before the defense.

Five working days before the dissertation defense date, the dissertation will be available for public viewing at the R&D department.
