Latin American poster in the G18 gallery
28. August 2023Gallery G18 will start the new academic year with a Latin American poster exhibition entitled ¡IMPRESSIONES DE AMÉRICA LATINA! – posters and prints. In addition to artists from South American countries, the exhibition will also provide greater insight into printing techniques, especially screen printing. The opening will take place on Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 18:00, with an opening speech by curators doc. M.Sc. A. Pavel Noga, ArtD. (head of the Graphic Design studio) and Eduardo Barrera Arambarri (PhD student of the Graphic Design studio).
The screen printing technique appeared in China as early as the first century AD. However, as a result of technological developments that led to the emergence of faster and more powerful offset presses, it has declined in the US and Europe. One of the countries where screen printing continued to prosper was Mexico and the surrounding countries.
Mexico put itself on the graphic design map in 1968 thanks to the visual style of the Summer Olympics. It was during this period that the Graphic Design Biennale was established in Europe, specifically in Warsaw and Brno. Graphic design reached its peak only in the 1990s, at the same time as the Mexican International Poster Biennial.
“The exhibition will present more than 60 posters and limited edition prints by professionals not only from the Mexican classical generation from the 90s, which will bring cultural, social, political and commercial overlap to the gallery. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet a selection of the most important graphic designers from Mexico, Cuba, Brazil and other countries,” explains graphic designer and one of the curators of the exhibition, Eduardo Barrera Arambarri.
In addition to the displayed posters, the exhibition also includes a screen printing workshop, which will introduce visitors to the authentic atmosphere of Latin American culture of local printers. As part of the accompanying program, there will be a lesson on separating colors for screen printing and an expert lecture for the public on various printing techniques.
The exhibition will last from September 28 to November 24, 2023, always from Monday to Thursday, 1-6 p.m. Admission is free for all.
