Reason Versus Emotion: Zlín Industrial Design

The Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University University in Zlín in cooperation with the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín invites you to the exhibition Reason Versus Feeling, which maps the history of design in Zlín between 1918 and 1958 and presents this topic in a completely new way, among other things by means of a number of interactive elements. The exhibition will be on display at the regional gallery from 11 December till 1 March 2020 and also at the faculty gallery G18. The exhibition will open 10 December at 5 pm in Building 14 of the former Svit works, where the regional gallery is located.

The dominant axis of the exhibition Reason Versus Emotion is the history of the Bata School of Arts (1939–1949), where one of the icons of Zlín design was created during the war – the design of the MAS R50 turret lathe, the work of sculptor Vincenc Makovský. The opening part of the exhibition therefore aims to introduce this machine into the broader context of the development of engineering production at Bata in the interwar period.

For the first time, the exhibition will show the theme of the beginning of industrial design not only through unique period exhibits and documents. Its innovative concept gives visitors a unique opportunity to try out new technologies such as augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) and experience the exhibition from a completely new perspective.

The exhibition Reason vs: Zlín Industrial Design 1918–1958 is part of a large-scale joint project of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín, the National Technical Museum in Prague and the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín, mapping design in technical disciplines during the existence of Czechoslovakia and is implemented with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic within the NAKI II project Designers in the Czech Lands and Czechoslovak Engineering Industry (DG18P02OVV059).

You can visit the exhibition in the faculty gallery G18 until the end of January. It will be on display at the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín until 1 March 2020. At the same time, the public can attend guided tours at the regional gallery with design curator Vít Jakubíček, which take place on 14 January and 28 January, always on5 pm.
