Lecture: Saul Marcadent – Expanded Publishing

On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University will host a lecture by researcher and curator Saul Marcadent. He will focus on the topic of “expanded publishing”—a broader conception of publishing that explores print media as a space for experimentation, relationships, and visual storytelling.

The lecture will take place at 10:00 a.m. in room U4/201 as part of the course Lecture by a Professional from the Field (POD1). It is intended for students in both bachelor’s and master’s degree programs and will be conducted in English.

The Expanded Publishing project explores publishing as an open language and space where theoretical research, curatorial practice, and work with printed materials intersect. The lecture will focus primarily on visual culture magazines and their role in the contemporary post-digital environment. It will present print periodicals as spaces where artists, designers, and fashion creators can work with imagery, narrative, and cultural context.

Saul Marcadent

Marcadent works as a researcher at the Università Iuav di Venezia and also as a curator. Through its exploration of the concept of ‘expanded publishing’, Marcadent examines publishing as a language and an open space where theoretical research, curatorial practice and work with printed materials intersect. He is the author of Publishing as Curating. Design and Imagery in Contemporary Fashion Magazines, which has been published in Italian, English, and Spanish, and contributes to the Treccani Arte encyclopedia.

In 2024, he served as a visiting researcher at UAL University of the Arts London. He has lectured at HEAD Genève, The New School Parsons Paris, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, among others. As a guest curator, he has collaborated with institutions such as ICA Milano, the Istituto Svizzero in Rome, and the Gucci Garden in Florence.

The program will also include a follow-up workshop that will give students the opportunity to work with selected printed materials in a more practical way.
