Exhibition by photographer Jan Jindra entitled “Under So Many Lids”
2. December 2025The exhibition “Pod tolika víčky” (Under So Many Lids) by Czech photographer Jan Jindra, which you can see from December 5, 2025, to January 31, 2026, at the Aspekte Galerie in Gasteig HP8 in Munich, embarks on a photographic exploration of the places where Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926) lived and worked. The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, December 5, 2025.
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Rilke’s birth, the exhibition “Under So Many Lids” provides a glimpse into the poet’s turbulent life, dependent on patrons, which took him across Europe. The photographs are accompanied by quotations or excerpts from Rilke’s literary works and correspondence, offering a visual interpretation from the perspective of a highly sensitive author. The introductory text and accompanying texts were written by Alena Bláhová.

On the one hand, the exhibition focuses primarily on Prague. Rilke’s birthplace has retained its unique atmosphere to this day, and it seems that the original places have remained untouched by time and change. On the other hand, it also visits places that played an important role in Rilke’s adult life. Rilke was always a careful observer of his surroundings. Whether he stayed somewhere for a short time or longer, he often returned and tried to understand the essence of these inspiring places.

Doc. MgA. Jan Jindra studied photography at the FAMU film school in Prague and focuses on thematically closed photographic cycles. He also visits and photographs places associated with Kafka – the book “S Kafkou na cestách” (On the Road with Kafka) was published in 2024. He has received many internationally recognized awards for his work. Since 2002, he has been teaching at the Photography Studio at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at Tomas Bata University in Zlín.
