I Perceive the World Differently, Yet I Live In It with You

A six-month cooperation between the non-profit organization Za sklem o.s. – Zlín and the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín will result in a joint photography exhibition in April, which aims to raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The exhibition, entitled I Perceive the World Differently, Yet I Live In It With You will open on April 6 at 5pm in the lobby of the František Bartoš Regional Library in Zlín and will run until the end of April.

The photographs you will see at the exhibition were taken by students of the Advertising Photography Studio under the guidance of photographer Jan Jindra. The exhibition contains a set of 28 photographs of people with and without autism spectrum disorder, and the panels with the photographs are accompanied by a sentence that characterises the person in the photograph. The message of the exhibition is clear – at first glance, people with ASD are no different from the majority society, they just perceive the world a little differently.

The idea for the exhibition was conceived last summer, when the cooperation started between the FMC and Za sklem o.s. – Zlín, an organisation that helps people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families in Zlín, Olomouc, Prague and Brno. From the beginning, the exhibition was intended to be a travelling exhibition, so after Zlín it will make further stops in the Czech Republic.

“The project is significant for us not only because of its social and societal overlap, but also thanks to connecting students and teachers of the studios of Advertising Photography, Graphic Design, Audiovisual Design, Spatial Design, Arts Management and the Department of Marketing Communications,” says Jitka Alexová, manager of the Centre for Creative Industries and Entrepreneurship UPPER, who coordinated the cooperation with Za sklem o.s. – Zlín on behalf of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications.

After Zlín, the exhibition will visit other cities in the Czech Republic. “We are negotiating with owners of interesting spaces in Brno, Olomouc, and Prague. Our goal is to have the exhibition on display in all regional cities for the next two years. Since the whole set has been translated into English, we will try to take the exhibition beyond the borders of the country,” adds Saskia Mišová from Za sklem o.s. – Zlín.
