Exhibition mAI type

December 2024Galerie G18 in Zlín is pleased to present the exhibition mAI type, which brings a unique perspective on the development of contemporary typography in the era of rapidly evolving tools using generative artificial intelligence (AI). The exhibition will open on Wednesday 11 December 2024 at 6pm, and will run until 27 February 2025.
The mAI type exhibition presents the results of the work of students of the Graphic Design Studio of the Faculty of Multimedia Communications at the University of Technology in Zlín. Under the expert guidance of Lenka Baroňová and Jakub Hrdina, they have explored new possibilities of working with type, in which traditional manual techniques are intertwined with digital tools and powerful artificial intelligence.
“Students of the second and third year of the Font and Typography course are working on topics arising from mastering and breaking typographic rules. Through these experiments, they validate the communicative (informational and emotional) layers of typeface. The project would like to show that we not only write and read with type, but we can also use it in its unique shapes for creative artistic play,” says Lenka Baroňová, the author of the exhibition.
The aim of the project was not to confront human creativity and the possibilities of AI as a rival entity, but rather to show the spectrum of tools with which contemporary graphic designers work. On specific typographic tasks such as visual puns, optical illusions or metaphors, students experimented with varying degrees of AI involvement – from minimal intervention to maximum use of generative tools.
“The intention was to enable students to encounter generative tools and open up a space for dialogue between man and machine. The exhibition proves that AI is not just a helper, but a new medium that can expand the resources of the creative design process,” says Jakub Hrdina, who consulted with the students about the involvement of AI in their work.
In addition, the students’ work will be enriched by works by contemporary AI artists from different parts of the world, as well as a thematic accompanying programme in the form of a calligraphy workshop and a workshop focused on generative AI. The opening of the exhibition will take place on Wednesday 11 December 2024 at 6pm at G18 Gallery, Štefánikova 5670 in the presence of curator Helena Maňasová Hradská and educators – Lenka Baroňová and Jakub Hrdina. The exhibition will run from December 12, 2024 to February 27, 2025, always during regular opening hours from Monday to Thursday, 1-6 pm, admission is free.
