Best in Design 2023

The 14th edition of the international competition Best in Design is starting. It is intended for students, designers, and all new talents who want to show unconventional solutions in their work and therefore gain support for their creations. A new competition category, Service Design, is also opening this year. The application process will run from 5 December 2022 to 28 February 2023.

This year there will be a total of four categories: Product & Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Communication Design, and the Service Desing mentioned above.

One of the new category judges is Bori Fehér, Head of Social Design Hub at MOME Innovation Centre. She is involved in social, ecological, and humanitarian design research projects. “By looking at existing processes through the service design lens, we can create innovative strategies for engagement that could potentially benefit society and all living things,” she comments on the importance of the category.

Service Design encompasses the complex design of processes, technologies, and interactions that drive service delivery through human-centred design, optimising the organisation’s operations, user and employee experience. Service design therefore influences all areas of a service, from practical solutions to service expansion, payment, and of course, the look and feel of the service.

The international Best in Design competition is only open to designs created after 1 January 2021 that have not participated in previous years. Both individuals and author collectives up to the age of 30 can participate. They must submit their work by 28 February 2023. In addition to the experience, competitors will receive a financial reward of up to €1,500, the opportunity to make new contacts, and get feedback from the professionals who will judge the work.

Personally, I have not experienced a place where people are more involved in the project. In the few years that I have had the privilege to participate in the competition, I have found that I want to apply to Best in Design every year that I have the chance, just to be part of this great ‘community’,” expressed Milan Florian Flicek, designer and winner of the Fashion Design 2022 category.

The results of the competition will be announced during the Zlin Design Week festival, which will take place on May 3–10, 2023. The entire festival has been organized since 2015 by the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University in Zlín and its students.
