Less is More project presented at an international exhibition in Portugal

From 19 to 24 May, the students of FMC TBU took part in an international exhibition at the Algarve Design Meeting in Faro, Portugal. The event was held on the occasion of the first public presentation of the international project Less is More, which connects seven universities focused on design and related fields.

The following universities are involved in the project:

  • Tomas Bata University in Zlín (Czech Republic)
  • Technical University in Zvolen (Slovakia)
  • Akademia Sztuk Pięknych im. Eugeniusza Gepperta we Wrocławiu (Poland)
  • Masaryk University (Czech Republic)
  • Universidade do Algarve (Portugal)
  • National Taipei University of Technology (Taiwan)
  • Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Israel)

The exhibition presented more than 40 student projects in the field of product, furniture, graphic and digital design. The common theme of all the exhibited works was the slogan “Less is More”, known from the modernist architecture of the 20th century, and its possible contemporary interpretations. The exhibition showed how young designers from different parts of the world approach the question of simplicity, purpose and sustainability – and whether this slogan is still relevant, or whether they perceive it critically and try to redefine it.

Visitors could see a variety of approaches – from practical prototypes designed to save materials or use local resources, to conceptual and digital works that explore how the overload of stimuli and information affects our everyday decision-making. The exhibition thus not only showed the aesthetic qualities of the students’ designs, but also asked deeper questions. What place does simplicity have in today’s world? Is it really true that “less is more”, or do we deprive ourselves of diversity, comfort or cultural meaning by this approach?

The Less is More project will continue throughout the year. In September 2025, the exhibition will move to Galerie Zakamarek in Gliwice, Poland, and in 2026 it will be presented in an expanded form in Zlín as part of the Zlin Design Week festival.
