FUTURE IS? Zlin Design Week reveals theme for the jubilee 10th year

Zlin Design Week, one of the most significant events in the field of design, which is created under the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomas Bata University (UTB), has unveiled the theme of the upcoming 10th year, which is called “FUTURE IS/BUDOUCNOST JE”. The festival will kick off from 8th to 14th May 2024 in Zlín.

What will a world look like where technology creates extraordinary experiences and a resilient relationship between people and the planet thrives? What will be the role of design in addressing climate and social challenges? How can design make all our voices be heard? It is these core questions that resonate in today’s society that will be addressed in the forthcoming anniversary year of the festival.

“Design is constantly evolving, so we decided to explore and try to predict its future directions. We have podcasts and online discussions coming up later in the year to guide us all through the fundamental questions of the future. In general, there are high expectations for the anniversary year. We want to go a little further, not to grow in the quantity of the program, but to provide quality experiences, open stimulating discussions, speculate and predict the future development of design,” commented Ondřej Staněk, program manager of the festival.

Klára Pelcová, the current project manager, adds: “It’s a huge challenge and responsibility that Ondřej and I are aware of. In great cooperation with Jitka Smolíková, we are about to set the first round of the festival in a thematic environment of a resilient, accessible, and technology-filled future.”

Both Klára Pelcová and Ondřej Staněk joined the organizing team in 2021 and this year took over from former director Jitka Smolíková, who is also the festival’s dramaturge. Both have extensive experience in people and cultural management and are keen to bring a fresh perspective and enthusiasm for the festival’s development.

Zlin Design Week 2024, which will take place from the 8th to the 14th of May at several locations in Zlín, is an unmissable event in the contemporary design scene that cultural enthusiasts cannot miss.
