Modest Design and Great Co-work in 2020

Co-work? A necessity in 2020. And you are a necessity of the Zlin Design Week’s open call! Register your work and be a part of a project which will turn Zlín into a city of design.

Zlin Design Week connects young artists and experts on an international level. During a single week in May, you can enjoy the exclusive full program – including workshops, the Zlin Design Week Conference, and the Best in Design young talent competition. And of course evening activities such as videomapping and parties.

Thanks to an open call, young designers have the opportunity to present their work in an international environment and thus gain promotion on the festival’s social media platforms. Those who are interested can register their project or product, related to the theme of Co-work and The Most Modest Design, to the main exhibition of Zlin Design Week 2021.

This year marks the one hundred anniversary of the publication of Josek Čapek’s book The Most Modest Art. This book describes the magical power of everyday things. The strange year 2020 was a great reminder of the importance of the most basic things. After those 100 years, new materials and technologies are available and we live in a new, virtual world. But we still pay attention to modest and natural design solutions. Those that are often unnoticed however fundamentally affect our lives. A design that allows us to enjoy its use.

Have you created a project which is related to modesty? And it is not older than five years? If so, we can help you show it to the world! Make your ideas a reality, present them, and inspire others. The Zlin Design Week exhibition is open to young designers under the age of 30, students, individuals, groups, studios, and art schools. An independent jury will select the projects which will be presented at the exhibition. You can present individual products or whole exhibition projects. A separate section will be designated for each of these. Installation and exhibition space will be provided by the organizers free of charge, so all you have to do is to arrange the transport.

“The topic of Co-work and The Most Modest design is not only interesting  but also important. It is today that we have the time to stop and look around at what things surround us, what we use them for, what they look like, and whether they could be improved in some way. That is why I am very much looking forward to the projects that will enter the open call of our Zlin Design Week exhibition,” says the exhibition coordinator Eliška Janáková.

Designers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Serbia will take part in the exhibition thanks to the ZDW Exhibition Design Lab project, which is supported by the Visegrad Fund. Thanks to our partners Sensorium Bratislava, KÉK – Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre, Jan Matejka Academy of Fine Arts Krakow a University of Arts in Belgrade, the exhibition will be created in cooperation with a group of foreign students, young designers, and experienced professionals. ZDW Exhibition Lab helps to bring an insight into the creation of exhibition stands, the involvement of new technologies, and the work with an audience. The visitors themselves have the opportunity to meet individual partners during the festival’s series of workshops.
